Oscar 2021: the predictions on the winning films

Here are the possible films nominated for the 2021 Oscars: from Netflix titles like The Chicago 7 Trial and Mank to films like Nomadland and The Father

In such a particular year, after the closure of cinemas and the cancellation of many productions, the 2021 Oscar season is also expected to be somewhat atypical. Due to the pandemic, the famous ceremony will be postponed for two months: the 93rd edition of the Academy Award is set for April 25, 2021 . But what are the films designated for the title candidacy?

From the significant growth of Netflix , which has now acquired a predominant position in streaming, to festival titles worthy of some attention, here are the forecasts on the 10 films that could be nominated for the 2021 Oscars .


From the direction of Spike Lee , a Netflix production released on the platform last June: "Da 5 blood" tells the story of four African American veterans, engaged in a journey to Vientnam among the painful memories of the war and, at the same time, in an investigation in search of the hidden treasure forty years earlier together with their deceased comrade, Norman Holloway ( Chadwick Boseman sadly disappeared shortly after filming ended ).



Netflix appears again, in the early fall, with The Chicago 7 trial , directed by Aaron Sorkin. Supported by an excellent cast including Eddie Redmayne , Mark Rylance , Sacha Baron Cohen , Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Frank Langella , the plot centers on the reconstruction of the court case which, in 1969, saw several voices of American pacifism brought to trial in following the demonstrations during the previous year's Democratic Party Convention .


Gary Oldman stars in "Mank", coming to Netflix on December 4th . Director David Fincher stages a script written by his father   Jack: a bitter overview of the Hollywood industry through the eyes of Herman J. Mankiewicz. Amanda Seyfried also appears in the cast , as Herman 's young lover, starlet Marion Davies .


Also on December 4th, in the American theaters still open, Chloe Zhao's "Nomadland" will debut, a film inspired by the book by Jessica Bruder : Fern, a 60-year-old woman from the Midwest, after losing all her possessions, embarks on a new existence from seminomade. The film was the winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival 2020.


After Parasite's huge triumph, Lee Isaac Chung's "Minari" will be released in the United States on 11 December,   Sundance Film Festival winner: the story of an American family of Korean origins who move to rural Arkansas, investing their savings on a farm.


On December 18, "The Father" will be released in American theaters, starring the unrivaled Anthony Hopkins who, at 82, starred in the most impressive and lauded performance of his career, as he appeared at the Sundance Film Festival. The Father, film by French playwright Florian Zeller tells the story of Henry, a man struggling with senile dementia. Hopkins has in fact booked himself a place in the race for the Oscar for best actor, joined by Olivia Colman in the part of her daughter Anne.


On the same day, December 18, " Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" will be available on Netflix , directed by George C. Wolfe, based on the Auguste Wilson drama. Viola Davis will play the twenties blues star Ma Rainey, while beloved Chadwick Boseman will play Levee , a musician who, during a session in a recording studio, will find himself going head to head with the strong-willed singer.


"News from the world" , Netlfix production, is the new Christmas 2021 film: directed by British director Paul Greengrass, it will hit US theaters on December 25th. The film stars the legendary Tom Hanks in the role of Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a former Civil War officer who embarks on a dangerous journey in the Rocky Mountains together with the very young Johanna Leonberger ( Helena Zengel ).


"Pieces of a Woman" , is the first work of the Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó, based on one of his theatrical plays. The film tells the painful ordeal of Marta Weiss , a young woman forced to face mourning for the death of her newborn son, a character played by Vanessa Kirby. Alongside her in the film, available on Netflix from January 7, will also be Shia LaBeouf as her partner Sean and the timeless Ellen Burstyn as her mother Elizabeth .


Amazon Prime Video makes "One Night in Miami" , directed by Regina King , scheduled for streaming on January 15th. Written by Kemp Powers , the film tells a special night in February 1964, in the room of a hotel in Miami , the scene of the fictional encounter between four icons of the black imagination: the activist Malcolm X ( Kingsley Ben-Adir ), the boxer Muhammad Ali ( Eli Goree ), football champion Jim Brown ( Aldis Hodge ) and music star Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr ).
