Princess Diana certainly benefited from her marriage to Prince Charles . This is how she became the mother of her two beloved children, Prince William and Prince Harry . She lived in opulence and had the time and money to devote herself to the near and dear causes of her heart.

Diana also lost a lot: her privacy (her fight against bulimia may be the most famous eating disorder in history), her pride (Prince Charles fell in love and notoriously had an extramarital affair with Camilla Parker Bowles), and her dignity (her disgust and his own extramarital affairs were all reported in the news).

But it was only when the marriage of Princess Di and Prince Charles was officially dissolved on July 15, 1996, that the losses really began to add up. Here is all that Diana missed:

When married to Prince Charles, Diana was known as Her Royal Highness. The title separates the royal family from the rest of the British nobility. The loss of the title meant that Diana would have to bow to those with the title, including her ex-husband, her in-laws, and even her own children.

Although Queen Elizabeth II was willing to allow Diana to retain the title, Prince Charles insisted that she give up. According to Diana&#39;s former butler Paul Burrell, then 14-year-old Prince William comforted Diana by promising to give her the title back one day when she becomes king. But for the rest of Diana&#39;s life (precisely one year and three days), she was known as Diana, Princess of Wales.

Royal family members are given a huge travel budget and options to stay in expensive and exclusive locations, but many of these perks ended for Diana after the divorce. Among other limitations, Diana&#39;s foreign travel, unless it was a private holiday, had to be signed by the Foreign Office and the Queen.

The 100 or so charities that Diana supported during the marriage were reduced to six after the divorce. She continued to support these causes for the rest of her life.

Divorce pressures led to a break between Diana and Gianni Versace about the book Rock and Royalty, in which Diana&#39;s life was exposed. This split led to a feud between Diana and Elton John, also co-author (though they reconnected after the Versace assassination).

In the fall of 1995, Diana fell in love with Pakistani heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan. She adored him so much that she considered leaving the UK to live with him in Pakistan. But that relationship ended the year after the divorce, partly a casualty of the relentless public interest in Diana&#39;s private life.

In the months before her death, Diana felt an invasive feeling that she was being spied on. She had her rooms at Kensington Palace constantly guarded; she also feared she was murdered, probably by a car accident. Diana even saw her own guards as potential attackers.

Princess Diana was a tragic figure. With great heart and beauty, she died just as she seemed most to fear, leaving behind her dear children and still heartbroken at the end of her relationship with Dr. Khan.
