The creator of the looks of Sex and the City takes us to the discovery of Emily's wardrobe. Anything but "ringarde"

Legendary costume designer Patricia Field, the woman who made Sarah Jessica Parker a fashion icon thanks to her role as Carrie Bradshaw in &quot;Sex and the City&quot;, has a new muse: Lily Collins, our cover girl and star of the Netflix series &quot; Emily in Paris &quot;. The actress plays the young 20-year-old Emily Cooper of Chicago who finds herself working for a marketing company in the French capital and becomes an overnight social media influencer. The style is rich, the result of the instinctive clash of pieces that are only apparently contrasting. A mix of pr&ecirc;t-&agrave;-porter and vintage that becomes the language with which Emily talks about herself - no French for her, faithful to the American accent. And if we were very nostalgic for Bradshaw&#39;s walk-in closet, for the rows of shoes, for the improbable but almost hypnotic outfits, our prayers were answered. In fact, Patricia Field invented the Carrie Style 2.0, an updated version of the style of our darling. Will Emily be able to take Carrie&#39;s place? We talked about it with Miss. Field, also responsible for the &quot;Devil wears Prada&quot; or &quot;Ugly Betty&quot; looks, struggling on the set of a new series.

What was your main inspiration for dressing Lily / Emily?

My inspiration for dressing Emily / Lily came from an idea that I imagined a hybrid between an American girl from the Midwest, crossed with the Parisian style. As the show progresses, he adapts the Parisian style with his American twist, which means more color to me. Emily often punctuates her everyday looks with beanies and even sports an Eiffel Tower printed top ( by Alice + Olivia) on her first day at work at French luxury marketing firm Savoir. A move that expresses his naivety on the one hand, and his enthusiasm for this job opportunity on the other. In some moments the homage to Audrey Hepburn, an actress to whom Lily resembles, is evident: in the opera scene she wears a dress by Christian Siriano. A tribute to Cinderella in Paris , the iconic 1956 film.

What was it like working on Paris?

I hired a local costume designer to &quot;think&quot; like a Parisian. I needed someone to guide me in places as well as aesthetics. The character &quot;takes cues from the &agrave; la fra&ccedil;ais style, including the typical beret and neck scarf for example. He then moves on to looks composed by international designers. From the French Alexandre Vauthier, whose black strapless top was paired with a tulle skirt by New Yorker David Dalrymple for the party Emily attends in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

Do you think Ringarde is the term you would use to define Emily, often referred to as a &quot;Gossip girl&quot; genre?

From what I understand, ringarde means basic. I believe Emily&#39;s style is not basic, but a blend of her approach to mixing contemporary designers and brands. For me, color was the most important element in her wardrobe. The charm on the bag with the Eiffel Tower, that is the one that triggers the discussion with Pierre Cadault, is a reminder of Emily&#39;s adolescence - in this scene she confesses that she always dreamed of being Serena Van Der Woodsen - trash maybe, but it&#39;s just a lucky charm.

One of the hallmarks is the vintage phone cover. How did you come up with this idea?

I found the vintage phone case over a year ago as I was shopping in Korea for my boutique. The reason I chose to use it is that in the script Lily was constantly taking photos for Instagram and because so many people loved my personal cover, I thought, let&#39;s make her phone case the [new] &quot;Carrie&quot; necklace.

Did Carrie love Manolos and Emily?

The Loubi! A special request from Lily Collins. It is not known how she did it with all the cobblestones in the streets of Paris, but she never complained.

Can you tell us, who do you think Pierre Cadault is if he were a real designer?

It might but it&#39;s not up to me to reveal it. In real life, the dress Emily wears at auction is by St&eacute;phan Rolland, who just launched her pr&eacute;t-&agrave;-port&eacute;r line.

Emily loves Chanel. Is it because it is the dream of every girl on the planet to dress Chanel par excellence or is it something that an American in Paris would like to wear to &quot;feel Parisian&quot;?

Chanel is known all over the world. Sure, it&#39;s the number 1 iconic brand that any American girl turns to. Personally I like to use Chanel because, as it is classic, it can be styled in many different ways, from classic to funky, eg. with a pair of jeans like I did with Carrie.

Sylvie&#39;s look is inspired by Carine Roitfeld, how did you come up with this idea?

I was not aware that it was similar to Carine Roitfeld&#39;s style. I&#39;ve been a Rick Owens fan for many years and featured it in Sylvie&#39;s wardrobe in addition to the presence of pieces by Yohji Yamamot o. I was trying to approach Paris Chic in my own way. Colors not bright, dark and neutral with fine lines.

Emily&#39;s trendy colleague Julien is the hippest. How did you think about her look?

Julien&#39;s stylistic inspiration came from Julien himself (Samuel Arnold). I met him, we talked and he inspired me. I dressed him according to his personality. I just know she recently said she wanted to be bolder with her wardrobe. So it should be for everyone.

Camille, Emily or Mindy who is the most stylish?

No label should define a woman! It&#39;s all about interest, intelligence and individuality! They are all winners and they are all different. Along with Darren Star, the show&#39;s creator, I went through the auditions of who the performers would be, before the roles were even cast, to help shape the characters. I like to review audition tapes and evaluate an actor&#39;s &quot;body language&quot; before creating a distinctive style.

Are you working on any other projects besides Emily&#39;s second series?

&quot;Run the World&quot; about a group of Harlem friends struggling with life, between relationships and professional life. The performers will be Amber Stevens West, Andrea Bordeaux, Bresha Webb and Corbin Reid and are ready to conquer the world. Does it remind you of anything?

The series has been criticized, called full of clich&eacute;s of all kinds. Yet the public rewarded her. We (so) need to dream. We live in a complicated, sometimes painful time. Maybe a little lightness, fun, is what we really need. And fashion also serves this purpose.
