The Gossip Girl during Regency-Era: this time with Julie Andrew as the narrator

The new phenomenon of the moment is called Bridgerton , the Netflix series released at Christmas and set in 19th century London (the story opens in the year 1813). Love, secrets, court intrigues and dream dresses are at the heart of the intriguing story created by Chris Van Dusen and American TV legend Shonda Rhimes, screenwriter, producer of Grey&#39;s Anatomy and How to Get away with Murder, to name a few. Defined by many &quot;the Gossip Girl of the Regency era&quot;, the story tells the vicissitudes of Victorian London struggling with dances, weddings, intrigues and secret loves revealed by a ruthless anonymous writer ready to tell the whole city the excesses of a class spoiled by privileges. Two families at the center of the gossip: the Bridgertons and the Featherington, two extremely different families who face a similar fate. The flagship of a series that promises big numbers and a somewhat sparkling sequel, are certainly the costumes, so delicately perfect. As the costume designer Ellen Mijornick states (in her curriculum The Greatest Showman, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction) the intent has never been to represent the costumes of the time with historical accuracy (Sutton ironically states &quot; we created the exact opposite of the Jane Austin looks &quot;), but to give a contemporary and contemporary touch to a past story of love and scandal. In total 7,500 pieces have been prepared, pieces yes, because the secret for the dazzling dresses is to superimpose different fabrics and accessories, giving each look a unique refinement and poetry. 5 months to prepare everything: a race against time in the creation of the perfect clothes. The designer said that the drawings and paintings of the time were essential to prepare the basis of all the sketches. The clothes were then made with more recent prints and with fabrics taken directly from the 1950s: a mix of eras, colors and designs. As a final touch, the archives of Dior&#39;s first collections have toned the final touch of eternal elegance that only the French Maison can give. &quot; Each family has its own color, a specific palette that represents it and that reveals to the viewer what the characters don&#39;t say,&quot; says Ellen. In fact, the Bridgertons , the aristocratic family par excellence, wear only soft colors defined by the costume designer as &quot;dusty&quot;: pale blue, light silver and slightly hinted green. Each outfit gives the viewer the image of the perfect family, wealth, elegance and excellent education that the girls had to become perfect wives to marry. The eldest daughter and star of the series, Dafne, wears 104 different costumes, during the series she also travels a path of personal evolution: from a hopeful and naive young girl she slowly transforms into a strong woman with strong ideals. Her wardrobe follows this transformation: from virginal dresses in candid and ethereal colors with empire silhouettes to dresses in more decisive shades, which reflect the new personality of the young woman. The Featherington family, on the other hand, has not belonged to the social class of the nobles for generations: fabrics rich in yellow, orange and pink flowers give the protagonists clothes that capture the attention and that shout to the world their new, and long-awaited, social status. The most fashionista of the clan? Surely the mother Portia, who with her extravagant wardrobe always steals the show from her young daughters of marriageable age. It is no coincidence that Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Collins were the sources of inspiration for her looks. But who best represents the carnival spirit and over the top of the show is certainly Queen Charlotte, who &nbsp; with her excessive hairstyles and flashy clothes she seems to have just come out of an enchanted and surreal world. The television personality of the soverana refers to the royal Queen Charlotte who never changed the silhouette of her clothes throughout her reign. Glorious and refined clothes, therefore, but also very structured and rigid that required great effort and effort to be worn. As the last but not least collaborator, the cast relied on the legendary Mrs Pearl, costume designer famous for having created to the most extravagant and talked about corsets of our times, from Thierry Mugler to Jean Paul Gaultier.
